Palestinians are either city people or country people... and the two groups seem to really dislike each other. More so than most countries that I have lived in. A few of the teachers and employees of the school live in small villages around Nablus and commute in. I have heard on more than one occasion people who also work here say really really nasty things about the teachers who are from the country. More than just things like calling them simple or old fashion.
The story my students read in class yesterday was about the differences between the two and the positives of each. Of the 22 students only 3 said they liked the country and that was because their father's have ranches outside nablus and they get to ride their horses there.
I did notice that the few students that i know who are from the country were the firmest supporters of the city in my class........
Here is one of the essays one of my students, Iyad Amer, wrote:
The city better than the country because there is no shoop in the country. But the city there is and the city there are a toys and many cars. but in the country there is no toys and a little no good carse and the streets in the country is not good. and for all this the answer is the city better than a country.
